SUMMARY:Institute for Government conference 2026 - online
DESCRIPTION:2026 is set to be a hugely significant year for Keir Starmer’s government and British politics. The government is under pressure to show it can deliver. Critical elections are taking place across England\, Wales and Scotland. And the decisions taken in November’s budget will be being felt across the country. \nSo are No.10 and the Treasury set up to deliver economic growth? Is the government making any progress in its efforts to “rewire the state”? What could May’s elections mean for British politics? And what do the public think of the government’s performance? \nTo explore these questions and more\, Government 2026 will be packed with fascinating panel discussions\, keynote speeches\, in-conversation events\, new polling and more\, all exploring what government is doing well – and what it could be doing better.

SUMMARY:Tackling the Far and Populist Right - Bournemouth
DESCRIPTION:The resurgence of far-right and populist right narratives in the media and society has resulted in popular support for radical and extreme right parties and commentators growing to levels unseen since the 1930s. \n\nThe TUC’s strategy to tackle the far and populist right is rooted in our core principles of solidarity\, equality\, and justice and securing a future where equality and fairness triumph over fear and hate.\nUnions are among the few institutions with the resources\, campaigning know-how and organising reach to counter the rise of the far and populist right. But we can’t do this alone so we must join forces with community organisations and other social movements to set our alternative to the politics of hate and division.\n\nTUC Education are therefore holding regional briefings across the country for union reps and activists to share knowledge and skills that you need to help counter divisive narratives that are rising in our workplaces and communities.\n\nBy building union strength and effectiveness where it matters most – in the workplace – we can demonstrate positive democracy and collective strength\, and win for working people\, not matter who you are\, your background or where you come from.\n\nLOCATION\nKinson Community Centre\nPelhams Park\nMillhams Rd\nBournemouth\nBH10 7LH

SUMMARY:UKICE Lunch Hour: Changing party politics in the UK - online
DESCRIPTION:British politics has become both increasingly volatile and more fragmented. Parties are rising and falling with greater speed and there are more candidates for more parties than ever before. \nThe 2024 general election was the first ever five-plus party competition and magnified the influence of Britain’s first past the post electoral system. Labour won a huge majority on just over a third of the vote and huge numbers of votes were cast for parties that now have little representation. \nBut what are the consequences of the changes to the party landscape in the UK? How will the parties respond to the challenges that May’s local elections will pose? And in this new landscape\, is the UK’s electoral system fit for purpose? \nTo discuss all this and more\, UK in a Changing Europe and the APPG for Fair Elections have assembled a panel of both politicians with skin in the game and expert pollsters. Join us online as we discuss political fragmentation in the UK and what it means for our politics. \nSpeakers \n\nCatherine Barnard (chair)\, UK in a Changing Europe\nLisa Smart MP\, Liberal Democrat and Vice-Chair of the APPG for Fair Elections\nSean Woodcock MP\, Labour\nRob Ford\, University of Manchester\n\nYou can sign up via Eventbrite here.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January) is when people across the world gather to remember the 6 million Jewish people who were murdered in the Holocaust. We also commemorate the millions more people murdered through the Nazi persecution\, the communists\, LGBT+ and disabled people as well as the millions more who were murdered in other genocides around the world. \nEvents in 2025\nHolocaust Memorial Day Trust stresses\, “At a time of heightened tensions and communal division in the UK\, partly as a result of the conflict in the Middle East\, bringing communities together in recognition of our common humanity is more important than ever and HMD activity organisers all across the UK play a vital role in making this happen.” \nIt is imperative for us all to remember historic and current genocides\, and to understand the causes that lead up to such atrocities so that we can stop it from happening again. These actions have been the culmination of years of powerful regimes\, political parties and groups\, and individuals sowing seeds of hatred against those they pose as ‘other’. This is still happening today. \nGet-Involved-guide-for-trade-unions_updated-2022.pdf

SUMMARY:LGBT+ History Month
DESCRIPTION:LGBT+ History Month is celebrated every year in February and is an important opportunity to mark LGBT history and activism\, celebrate movements towards equality and show solidarity with LGBT people in the UK and around the world who still face violence\, harassment and discrimination at work and their everyday lives because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. \nFor a very long time LGBT+ people’s history has been hidden and the contributions LGBT + people and communities have made to UK society overlooked. LGBT+ History Month gives us another opportunity to put the record straight. It enables us to celebrate the achievements and contributions of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and non-binary (LGBT+) people and highlight the ongoing struggles and discrimination they face. \nIn the United Kingdom LGBT History month is celebrated in February.

SUMMARY:Labour for a New Democracy - Briefing: Bills\, thrills & committees - online
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this briefing on the latest from the parliamentary campaign for Proportional Representation.\n\n\nTo attend email the host: hello@labourforanewdemocracy.org.uk\n\n\nFollowing a 2nd reading debate in which Labour MPs led calls for a National Commission on Electoral Reform\, the Representation of the People Bill has entered Committee stage. This is when 17 MPs examine the legislation line-by-line over a period of several weeks. This is the first\, but not the last\, opportunity for MPs to consider amendments.\n\n\nAt the same time\, the Housing\, Communities and Local Government Committee (HCLGC) has launched an inquiry about modernising elections. The Select Committee\, which is responsible for holding the Government to account about UK democracy (as well as a dizzying range of other issues)\, has begun by opening a Call for Evidence\, about the state of Britain’s electoral democracy and what changes are required.\n\n\nOn Thursday 26 March\, we’ll talk through what’s going on in Parliament\, how the various committee processes work\, what opportunities this creates\, and what you can do to help push for electoral reform.

SUMMARY:How to Replace ‘First Past the Post’: Electoral Reform in Action - London
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mile End Institute to debate the future of British democracy – and vote at the end on the voting system that YOU prefer! \nIn 1918\, Parliament came within hours of abolishing First Past the Post. The system only survived because the two Houses disagreed on the system that should replace it. With the Bill on the brink of collapse\, the question was postponed – a reprieve that has lasted for 107 years. \nIn a recent YouGov poll\, only 23% of respondents backed First Past the Post. But what might replace it? Different countries use a dizzying array of different systems\, which are designed to do different things. Some are ‘proportional’\, others ‘preferential’. Some would expand the range of parties\, while others might shrink them. Do we want our electoral system to give us strong governments or strong parliaments? Do we want more or fewer regional parties\, independent candidates\, extremist parties or coalitions? \nIn this event\, co-hosted with Unlock Democracy and the Electoral Reform Society\, our expert panel will present different electoral systems as used in France\, New Zealand\, Scotland\, Ireland and the Netherlands. We will debate their strengths and weaknesses; what they can and can’t achieve; and how they work in practice. \nJoin us to debate the future of British democracy – and vote at the end on the system that YOU prefer!

The aim is to build a map of unrecognised workplaces across UK cities to support unions within the TUC to maximise trade union membership\, tackling current issues affecting the younger generation of workers\, and broadening the TUC and affiliated unions understanding of the nature of work in unrecognised workplaces.\n\nWe are now looking for volunteers from anyone who is considered a young member within their union interested in supporting us to sign up using the link below or the QR code on the attached leaflet.\n\nFull training and support will be provided in preparation for the event and on the day itself. There are plenty of roles available to get involved and make a difference for trade unionism throughout the UK. If you have any questions\, please reach out to SFulton@tuc.org.uk or your regional officer.\n\nWe look forward to hearing from you!\n\nIn Solidarity\,\nTUC Young Organisers Network

SUMMARY:NAHT annual conference 2026 - Belfast
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Conference is more than just a meeting – it’s the biggest event in the NAHT calendar\, where union policy is shaped\, networks are built and members’ voices lead the way forward. \nEvery year\, hundreds of school leaders from across the UK come together to: \n\n\n✨ Put forward motions and debate the issues that matter most in their schools \n✨ Vote on NAHT’s policy priorities for the year ahead\n✨ Hear directly from leading figures across the education sector\n✨ Connect\, share experiences and build lasting relationships with colleagues. \n\n\nMost importantly\, conference is where our union demonstrates that it is led by the members\, for the members. Your voice helps set our direction\, from national campaigns to pressing the government for real change.
