SUMMARY:Warm This Winter - Day of Action on Fuel Poverty across the UK
DESCRIPTION:We’re working with groups and communities to put on events and actions in villages\, towns and cities up and down the country. We’re planning a huge display of people power to show we have the solutions to the energy crisis and they need to be implemented now. \n\nHere’s how to take part \nEvents and activities will be distributed around the country showing the breadth of demand for change. Actions and events can look like anything you would like them to. \nThey can range from a small gathering of friends and family to discuss the issues we’re facing\, a stall in your town centre or an event in a local community hall or park. You could share leaflets and information about the campaign and how people can stay warm this winter\, it could be a visual stunt making the most of your creative talents\, or a demonstration or town hall event where folk can come and hear people speak. You decide what will work for you and your community. Whatever it is\, however big or small\, it will help spread the word and make it clear that we demand change.

SUMMARY:Why isn't our politics working and how can we fix it? - London
DESCRIPTION:The UK has experienced a period of profound disruption. SUMMARY:Bold Solutions: The economic\, climate and energy crises and how we fix them - London
DESCRIPTION:A TUC conference on solutions to the energy\, climate and economic crises \nBoth our economy and our planet are in crisis. \nBills and sea levels are rising at an unprecedented rate. Nationally\, the cost-of-living scandal is driving absolute poverty and forcing millions into increasingly desperate conditions. Globally\, climate change is threatening the lives and livelihoods of billions of workers. These crises are parallel and inter-linked. \nWe urgently need a politics that builds a safe climate for future generations\, a rapid and just transition with quality jobs\, and an economy that rewards work\, not wealth. The TUC is convening a conference: two events\, one in person and one online\, that will coincide with COP 27 and bring trade union and climate activists together to gather solutions. \nHow do we combine our struggles for an equitable cost of living\, workers’ rights and a just transition to climate safety?

SUMMARY:TUC LESE briefing for trade union health and safety reps
DESCRIPTION:Trade union health and safety reps did an epic job during the pandemic\, literally saving lives through their expertise\, actions and commitment. But it was a really tough time for them. \nAnd now\, in addition to all the pre-existing workplace hazards\, there are additional issues related to long Covid\, to hybrid working\, and an explosion of workplace stress.\n\n\nTrade union health and safety reps need and deserve up to date information\, and examples of good practice to seek to emulate. They will benefit from networking with other H&S reps. And we need more activists to volunteer to be TU H&S reps. \nPut 25 November in your diary\, contact us to register your interest at lese@tuc.org.uk and reserve a space at this briefing\, putting ‘H&S reps 25 November’ in the subject box. \nIf you are not signed up for the TUC’s RISKS bulletin\, then sign-up today.

SUMMARY:Wales TUC Greener Workplaces Network: Wales’ energy future and the workplace
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n\n**Participants can choose either joining in person or online\, please register for confirming your attendance.  \nThis event: \nGreen energy must be adopted various industries in order to achieve net zero targets by 2050. The transition will have an enormous influence on different workplaces and no worker should be left behind. From a trade union point of view\, green energy has other benefits besides the obvious environmental ones: it can create more jobs on site or in the UK renewable energy industry\, and the investment a company makes is a good indication of its greater commitment to the future of the company. \nHow will energy be generated and used in the future and how might it affect union members’ jobs? \nProf Calvin Jones from Cardiff University offers some radical visions of a sustainable future economy to spark debate on how this might affect workplaces and workers. \nMary Williams from Unite Wales will share with us about union’s views on matters relating to powering heavy industry and manufacturing and the views of workers in the energy industry. \nOther speakers from a practical union case study to be confirmed. \nWho is this event for? \nThis event will be of particular interest to green/environmental reps and health and safety reps\, but will also be relevant for full time officers\, branch officials\, shop stewards\, other reps and all those trade unionists interested in the future of work and the future of the planet. Please share widely with Trade Union colleagues. \nAbout the Greener Workplaces Network \nThe group will meet every other month. Each meeting will feature guest speakers to explore different topics\, provide an opportunity for reps to network and share good practice and include updates from the Wales TUC and our union family. \nThis is your network\, so join us for this event and let us know your thoughts on how to shape our future\, please email swaihongho@tuc.org.uk Stanley Ho from the Wales TUC with your suggestions for future discussion. \nIf you’d like more ideas and information about what unions are doing to create greener workplaces\, download our Greener Workplaces for a Just Transition toolkit here and visit our campaign page where you’ll find campaign videos and more information.

SUMMARY:Supporting Older Workers to Plan\, Progress and Prosper in the Labour Market
DESCRIPTION:How we can better support the skills of older workers given a recruitment and retention crisis and a rapidly aging workforce. \nIn the UK we are living through a recruitment and retention crisis where over 900\,000 pre-retirement workers have left the labour market during the Pandemic. Like many countries in Europe we are also currently facing a demographic crisis\, with a shrinking workforce coupled with increased demands for social services. The labour force in Europe is projected to decrease by an average of two million every year between 2010 and 2030. This represents a loss of 1% of its current size per year for 20 years. Many workers retire early\, not because they want to\, but because they feel compelled to (or) that they do not have other options. \nSolutions need to be found to make work more sustainable\, and to extend working lives to avoid old-age poverty and to reduce state expenditure on pensions and welfare. \nRecent OECD research has highlighted that there are many millions of adults in Europe with low levels of functional literacy and/or numeracy skills and that the majority of these are in employment. This has negative implications for their employment potential and longer-term career prospects. \nAn Innovative European Project led by the TUC has explored the concept of the Mid Life Skills Review (MLSR). This is gaining favour in many countries and the role of social partners in both lobbying for and delivering elements of this is one that could be critical to its success. \nEmployers will need to improve how they attract\, manage and develop people as they age. This is particularly the case against a backdrop of technological change\, the Pandemic\, rising digital skills needs and labour shortages. \nJoin us to hear the latest thoughts from our panel of experts on how we need to help older workers to plan\, progress and prosper in the labour market. We will also explore how the successful Value My Skills offer from the TUC has been significantly improved and expanded. \nSpeakers include: \n\nAlison McGovern – Shadow Minister for Employment\nNaomi Clayton – Deputy Director of Research & Development\, Learning and Work Institute\nKevin Rowan – Head of Organisation\, Services and Skills\, TUC\nTeresa Donegan – Head of Learning and Organising Services\, UNISON\n\nAdmission to the event is free\, though places are limited and we are recommending that people reserve their spaces early.
