SUMMARY:BE A COUNCILLOR: with Elect Her
DESCRIPTION:Change “somebody should do something about that…” into “I’ve decided to be that somebody.”\nWe are inviting all women in England interested in local politics to join our Be a Councillor workshop. Hear from inspirational women in local politics to discover if becoming a councillor is right for you and how to get there\, whilst building a supportive community. \nFor women to be able to participate\, progress and stay in local politics\, we need new forms of networks and support that work for us. We’ll be hosting this gathering on Thursday\, 29th February\, from 7:30-9:00 pm. \nAll women are welcome to register for these sessions. Non-binary people whose experiences or identities intersect with women’s and therefore feel they would benefit from accessing a women-centred space are welcome to join us.

SUMMARY:IPPR Webinar: Healthy places\, prosperous lives
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday 19th February\, from 9.00 – 10.15am\, to launch the third interim report of IPPR’s Commission on Health and Prosperity\, Healthy places\, prosperous lives. \nThis report builds on our first interim report which showed that the UK is getting sicker and poorer. The report demonstrated that the onset of sickness substantially increased barriers to participation in work\, cost up to £2200 in earnings per year\, and decreased work satisfaction. \nIn this report\, we explore how this trend is playing out in places. We have found that people living in the most deprived local authorities in England are nearly one and a half times more likely to experience economic inactivity and are twice as likely to be in poor health than those in more affluent places. This clustering of health and economic inequality is a double injustice – and we have undertaken deliberative workshops\, quantitative analysis and policy testing to launch our new flagship policy: HAPI (Health and Prosperity Improvement Zones). \nThe Commission on Health and Prosperity envisions a UK that is a genuine world leader on health by the mid-century. HAPI zones are a mechanism to deliver on that promise\, and to ensure the biggest gains come in the places they are most needed. \nOur policy is focused on a simple premise: that if everywhere was as healthy as Wokingham\, the UK would be the healthiest and most equal country in the world. Our focus is on giving places\, local leaders and communities the tools to deliver on this premise. \nAt this event we will be joined by Andy Burnham\, Mayor of Greater Manchester and member of our Commission\, the Rt Hon Sir Norman Lamb\, former Minister of State for Health and Care\, Efua Poku-Amanfo\, lead author of the report and research fellow at IPPR\, and Councillor Angela Macpherson\, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing\, Buckinghamshire Council (invited)

SUMMARY:MVM Sefton & West Lancs - Meet Patrick Hurley the Labour PPC for Southport!
DESCRIPTION:Meet Patrick Hurley the Labour PPC for Southport! \nRegister for the zoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwsfuCopjoiGdANcSvFEZs39xPXc3aAJkTn \nAs we enter this General Election year\, Sefton & West Lancs MVM will be doing all we can to persuade our local MPs that our First Past the Post voting system must change. We believe every vote count should count. That would lead to a better way of running our country and help tackle disillusionment with politics. \nWhat better place to start than a meeting with Patrick Hurley\, the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Southport. Patrick will be our guest at our first meeting this year on 13 February at 7.30pm via Zoom. This will give us a chance to discuss his views on voting reform as he attempts to win this swing seat. A big turnout would be great\, especially if you live in Southport. This is your chance to push the case for proportional representation and show that there is public demand for PR. Patrick will be keen to hear your views.

SUMMARY:HeartUnions week
DESCRIPTION:#HeartUnions week\, 12-18 February 2024 is a chance to tell the story about why unions are vital for everyone at work\, and encourage people who aren’t yet in a union to join. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant a pay rise? Join a union\nUnion members earn up to £60\,000 more than non-union members over their working lives. Unionised workers are paid on average five percent more than other similar workers. Based on average pay\, the typical union pay premium is to £12\,800 over a decade. So if you want a pay rise\, it’s time to join a union. \nIn the last year\, working peoples have been forced to navigate their way through a cost-of-living crisis. The trade union movement has risen to meet this immense challenge\, winning significant pay rises and improvements to working conditions for workers in every sector. \nWhat’s HeartUnions about?\nHeartUnions is a campaign week of activity where the trade union movement celebrates unions and the good that we do. \nDuring the week we want to do two simple things: \n1. demonstrate how brilliant unions are by showcasing all that we achieve for working people – especially during the cost-of-living crisis. \n2. encourage as many people as possible who are already union members to ask someone they know to join one too. \nSo\, during the run up to HeartUnions week – and during the week itself – we’ll be sharing stories that show unions’ impact and providing reps and members with resources to help them get more people to join a union. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet involved\nWe hope unions will run their own HeartUnions campaigns highlighting what they’ve won with and for their members\, and encouraging more workers in their respective industries and sectors to join a union. \nOn social media we’ll be using the hashtag #HeartUnions. Use it to keep in touch with what the TUC and unions are saying\, and to publicise your own activities. \nWe’ll soon be sharing details of our HeartUnions events and our HeartUnions materials and merchandise on this web page- check back soon. \nOver the last year unions have demonstrated their relevance and effectiveness in helping working people like never before. \nUse #HeartUnions to say loudly and proudly – if you want a pay rise\, it’s time to join a union.

SUMMARY:ONLINE & ONSITE BOOK LAUNCH: Global Neo-liberal Capitalism and the Alternatives: from social democracy to state capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Join author Professor David Lane and discussants Andrew Murray and Radhika Desai; refreshments provided. \nThe twentieth century was an era of socialist revolutionary transformations and significant social-democratic reforms. By the twenty-first century\, these socialist inspired movements have largely disappeared\, their ideology had been disavowed\, and their institutions dismantled. In the first part of the book\, David Lane explains which social forces drove them and why\, initially\, they were successful. He considers how they were consequently reversed in the context of global neoliberal capitalism which became a dominant ideology driven by political and economic elites with significant social support and political legitimacy.

SUMMARY:Labour for a New Democracy - campaign update - online
DESCRIPTION:Keir Starmer kicked off the election year with a speech delivered in Bristol\, in which he called out a political system that just isn’t working: “Trust in politics is so low\, so degraded\, that nobody believes you can make a difference any more.” \nWhat we all know – and what the Labour Party officially recognises – is that the flaws in our First Past the Post voting system are driving precisely this kind of distrust and alienation in politics. \nThis year – with the help of members and affiliates like you – we will be working across the movement to transform this understanding into action by the next Labour government. Join us for our 2024 campaign launch to find out how you can get involved. \nSign up on the Labour for a New Democracy website.

SUMMARY:Protect the right to strike march and rally
DESCRIPTION:Our workers rights are under attack again.\nJoin us at Montpellier Gardens\, Cheltenham at 12pm on Saturday 27 January. Celebrate our history. Protest against the government. Stand up for your rights. \nForty years ago – on 25th Jan 1984 – Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government attacked trade union rights at GCHQ. Union members were told to resign their membership or be sacked. After a long campaign marked by the fortitude of the workers and their families\, and the solidarity of the whole movement\, they were reinstated when an incoming Labour government repealed the ban. \nToday\, the government has passed laws that could restrict the right to strike for over five million workers.. The right to strike is a fundamental British liberty. We must defend it at all costs. \nWe have won before. We will win again. Join our march and rally on 27 January. \nThe TUC are supporting this march and rally\, which is organised by PCS South West. \nBan of trade unions at GCHQ and the union fightback\n40 years ago\, Margaret Thatcher’s government announced its decision to impose a total ban on trade union membership at Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). Staff were ordered to resign their membership or face dismissal – 14 refused to do so and were sacked. For more than 13 years\, a small group of brave GCHQ staff and their unions campaigned for the right to belong to a union\, commanding huge support throughout the labour movement. Marches regularly took place in Cheltenham – where many GCHQ staff are based – between 1984 and 1997. Their principled and sustained campaign ended in 1997\, when the Labour government overturned the ban on unions. Staff at GCHQ are now members of PCS. The right to organise collectively to protect people in and out of work is a fundamental human right. Come to our event to learn from the past and celebrate the trailblazing campaign to restore workers’ rights at GCHQ. \nThreats to union rights today\nThe fight for our union rights is not over. Last year\, the Tories launched their latest move to restrict workers’ rights\, introducing the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act. The law stipulates that when workers in certain sectors lawfully vote to strike\, they could be forced to attend work – and sacked if they don’t comply. This undemocratic new law could curtail the right to strike for 1 in 5 workers. This is the last thing our crumbling public services or our dedicated frontline workers need – these draconian laws will poison industrial relations and drag out disputes. Ministers are punishing paramedics and rail staff for daring to stand up for decent pay and better services. But make no mistake. We won’t stand by and let workers get sacked for defending their pay and conditions. And we won’t rest until this law has been repealed. Our message is loud and clear. The entire trade union movement will rally behind any worker who loses their fundamental right to strike. \nTimings and location\n12pm – gather at Montpellier Gardens \n12:30 – march departs through town centre to Pittville Park (approximately 1 hour walk) \n13:30 – rally in Pittville Park

SUMMARY:World Aids Day
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, there are an estimated 36.7 million people living with HIV. More than 35 million people have died as a result\, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. Many people still don’t know the facts about how to protect themselves and others\, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for people living with the condition. People living with HIV are also more likely to experience poverty\, hardship and inequalities. \nMarking World AIDS Day shows a genuine commitment to equality and diversity. \nWe are winning the fight against HIV\, but we are losing the fight against ignorance. HIV diagnoses are falling in the UK\, meaning the spread of the virus is slowing down\, but the fight is not just about the virus. There are still 101\,000 people living with HIV in the UK\, there is no cure\, and people still face ignorance and discrimination that can limit their opportunities\, preventing them from living full and happy lives. HIV means you are more likely to live in poverty\, and more likely to have poor mental health. \nAlthough the epidemic is slowing in the UK\, nearly half of people who test positive are finding out they have HIV very late\, meaning the virus may have damaged their health permanently. \nOn World AIDS Day\, use materials to help raise awareness in your workplace\, and raise vital funds to help end new transmissions\, end stigma and end the inequalities faced by people living with HIV. \nFind out more from the National AIDS Trust website.
