SUMMARY:Greening our workplaces - 'Green Skills' for trade unionists - 3 day course
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse duration: \n3 days of learning (1 day per week spread over 3 weeks). \nThis course will take place online on 3 consecutive Mondays – the 30th of January\, 6th and 13th February 2023 – learners will need to attend each session. \nCourse delivery: \nOnline group sessions\, facilitated by a trade union education tutor via Microsoft Teams. \nWho should attend? \nThis course is aimed at both new and experienced green/environmental reps as well as other trade unionists who wish to take action on the climate and nature emergency in their workplace. It is suitable for all union officers\, branch officials\, reps\, health and safety reps\, union learning reps and equality reps who wish to find out more about the trade union approach to sustainability. \nCourse description: \nWorkers across all sectors will be affected by changes and will be part of the efforts to decarbonise and move Wales to a more sustainable\, zero-waste\, circular economy. And trade union members have the knowledge and ideas to help deliver the changes needed. \nWorkers have a huge amount of knowledge that can help organisations looking to reduce their environmental impact. It’s often the workers on the ground who are most likely to understand how to do this effectively. Trade unions can play a key role in identifying and delivering best environmental practice at workplace level. \nUnions can ensure that efforts to reduce an organisation’s environmental impact are developed collaboratively and in full consultation with workers. Involving workers can make sure that changes are fair\, effective and have the full support of people in the workplace. \nThis course focusses on the practical skills needed to develop union-led sustainability initiatives in the workplace. It covers the core skills required for trade unionists who want to take practical action on the environment in their workplace or become a trade union environmental or ‘green’ representative. \nAcross Wales\, union reps are already working with their members to make workplaces more sustainable. They are finding ways to cut carbon and reduce waste\, campaigning for cleaner air and creating green spaces to support nature. This course uses the Wales TUC’s new Greener Workplaces for a Just Transition toolkit as a resource and aims to support all trade unionists who want to be involved in the movement to green our workplaces. \nThe course covers: \n➔ Understanding the climate and environmental emergency and identifying the impact on your workplace. \n➔ Working with the branch and members to identify sustainability issues that need to be raised with management. \n➔ How to carry out workplace environmental audits. \n➔ How to review and develop workplace environmental policies and agreements \n➔ Awareness raising and promotion of green workplace practices. \nHow to apply: Fill in our application form  or contact the course tutor\, John James\, directly on John.James@coleggwent.ac.uk or 07527 450276 \nVenue: online \nHours: 9.15am to 16.45pm \nTime-off to attend training: \nGuidance on paid release can be found on pages 8 – 9 of the Wales TUC education course directory. \nACAS guidance states that it is good practice for employers to offer time off with pay for specialist reps such as green or environmental reps to attend training and carry out their duties. \nPlease speak to your own union for advice about securing time off and for guidance on any relevant agreements/procedures agreed between your employer and your union.

SUMMARY:PR and climate action - online or in London
DESCRIPTION:There’s an emerging consensus that we need to democratise to decarbonise. \nJoin us on Tuesday 7th February in central London and online for our upcoming panel event\, ‘Democracy Loves Climate Justice’. Our distinguished panel of senior politicians and climate experts will be discussing how Proportional Representation can help us to tackle the climate emergency. \nSpeakers: \n\nBaroness Natalie Bennett\, Green Party Peer\nClive Lewis MP\, Labour Party MP for Norwich South\nLiz Saville Roberts MP\, Plaid Cymru Leader in the House of Commons and MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd\nDave Timms\, Head of Political Affairs at Friends of the Earth (England\, Wales and Northern Ireland)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETING AND EVENT INFO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecent months have reminded us how important solving the climate emergency is. As we celebrated the new year\, temperatures across western Europe were hitting record highs\, while extreme weather events continue to increase in frequency. \n  \nIn the search for solutions to these problems\, the evidence shows that Proportional Representation (PR) can be of significant benefit in responding to broad-based climate concerns. Compared to countries with majoritarian voting systems\, countries with PR: \n\nScore on average six points higher on the Yale Environmental Performance Index.\nReduce emissions more quickly\, and are faster to take up renewable energy.\nEmbed the long-term approach to policy-making crucial to meaningful climate action.\n\n  \nThat’s why\, as part of MVM’s ‘Democracy Loves’ series\, we are keen to highlight the tangible positive policy consequences of PR. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKET\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe details \n  \nEvent: Democracy Loves Climate Justice\nDate: Tuesday 7th February 2023\nTime: 19:30 GMT\nLocation: Godfrey Mitchell Theatre\, One Great George Street\, London\, SW1P 3AA\nFormat: Hybrid (both in-person and online tickets are available) \n  \nThe event will begin with short presentations from each panellist\, followed by a Q&A. \n  \nYou can buy tickets here.

SUMMARY:HeartUnions week
DESCRIPTION:HeartUnions week 13-19 February 2023. A chance to tell the story about why unions are vital for everyone at work\, and encourage them to join a union.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter working through a global pandemic\, union members have been forced to navigate their way through a cost-of-living crisis this year. The trade union movement has risen to meet this immense challenge\, campaigning for fair pay\, demanding action to protect jobs and supporting members through thick and thin. \n  \nWhat’s HeartUnions about?\nHeartUnions is a campaign week of activity where the trade union movement celebrates unions and the good that we do. \nDuring the week we want to do two simple things: \n1. demonstrate how brilliant unions are by showcasing all that we achieve for working people – especially during the cost-of-living crisis. \n2. encourage as many people as possible who are already union members to ask someone they know to join one too. \nSo\, during the run up to HeartUnions week – and during the week itself – we’ll be sharing stories that show unions’ impact and providing reps and members with resources to help them get more people to join a union.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet involved\nWe hope unions will run their own HeartUnions campaigns highlighting what they’ve won with and for their members\, and encouraging more workers in their respective industries and sectors to join a union. \nOn social media we’ll be using the hashtag #HeartUnions. Use it to keep in touch with what the TUC and unions are saying\, and to publicise your own activities. \nWe’ll soon be sharing details of our HeartUnions events and our HeartUnions materials and merchandise on this web page- check back soon. \nOver the last year unions have demonstrated their relevance and effectiveness in helping working people like never before. \nUse #HeartUnions to say loudly and proudly – unions are winning for working people\, every worker needs a union.

SUMMARY:Lobbying for PR
DESCRIPTION:Join our last online event before the local elections to find out what’s next in the #Labour4PR National Policy Forum campaign. When members return from canvassing in early May\, we’ll be coming together to lobby key parts of the party for a commitment to electoral reform in the policy programme. \nIn early May we’ll be holding mass meetings between members and their elected regional NPF representatives all over the UK\, to set out why the next Labour government needs to scrap First Past the Post. \nAnd in late May\, you’re invited to a mass lobby of Parliament – calling on MPs of all parties to sort out our political system by backing a fair voting system. \nWith the party’s consultation closing on 17 March\, the L4ND team will talk you through this important second phase of the NPF campaign. Come along to find out everything you need to know.

SUMMARY:Straight to the Facts: In Conversation with Will Moy - Sheffield
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the University of Sheffield \nIn the wake of a spate of high profile fake news stories and disinformation\, calls for fact checking have reached new heights\, but can fact checking really save public debate? Is it able to meet public demands? Or is political speech so polarised that it is no longer possible to establish commonly held facts? At this event\, Will Moy\, the Chief Executive of Full Fact\, shares his insight from over a decade working at the forefront of the fact checking debate. Responding to new findings from a team of University of Sheffield academics\, this event asks whether public debate is condemned to be inherently unhealthy\, or whether fact checking can restore democratic debate. \nWill Moy is the Chief Executive of Full Fact\, the UK’s only independent fact checking organisation\, which checks claims made by politicians\, interest groups and the media. Full Fact work to counter bad information and expose the harm misleading claims can have. Will has worked at Full Fact since 2009 and is a leading voice in efforts to counter disinformation and bring about more informed public debate.
