SUMMARY:Unison for PR - Spring 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join this  meeting of Unison members who want to see their union come out in favour of Proportional Representation. \nUnison branches up and down the UK have been debating and passing motions in favour of PR – and sending them to the 2022 National Delegate Conference. With the motions in\, the next crucial step is to get PR prioritised by as many regions as possible – to make sure the issue makes it to debate on the conference floor. \nCome along on Thursday to hear how that prioritisation process works – and how you\, as a Unison member\, can lobby your region to push for a debate on PR. \nPlus\, we’ll look ahead to the the NDC\, start thinking about organising conference delegates\, and get an update on the separate Labour Link process. \nRegister today

SUMMARY:Levelling Up Democracy: Andy Burnham
DESCRIPTION:Join Andy Burnham\, in conversation with Guardian columnist Zoe Williams\, at the first of Labour for a New Democracy’s online Levelling Up Democracy series. \n“If the status quo has created the problem\, it can’t\, by definition\, supply the solution. Successful levelling up requires nothing less than the complete rewiring of Britain” \nAndy Burnham\, writing in Chartist Magazine \nThe UK has the worst regional inequality of any rich nation. Yet the current ‘levelling up’ debate ignores the deep\, structural causes of this: from a system that hordes power in Westminster\, to an unrepresentative House of Commons that struggles to see the big picture. \nBefore becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester\, Andy Burnham served as Labour MP for Leigh and in a number of Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet roles. Now outside of Westminster\, and with the pandemic shining a spotlight on just how unequal the UK is\, he will share his ideas on how radical democratic reform can help address inequality\, net-zero and a healthier political culture. \nHow can Proportional Representation\, devolution and more form a central part of Labour’s programme for rebuilding Britain? Join us to find out. \nFind out more and book your place

SUMMARY:Democratising the British State – The Foundation of a Good Society (Labour Conference)
DESCRIPTION:To transform Britain a Labour government must first transform our democracy. \nFor too long the conservative nature of our political system has acted as a barrier to the policies we need to tackle the crises we face – on climate\, on housing or the economy. \nJoin Clive Lewis MP\, Sam Tarry MP\, Christine Berry (Editor of The New Foundations)\, the ERS’ Jessica Garland and Open Labour’s Keiran O’Neill to discuss how a better democracy is the foundations of a progressive policy agenda. \nRemaking the state is not a ‘nice to have’\, but the only way a Labour Government can change Britain for good. \nPresented by Politics for the Many and Open Labour.

SUMMARY:Why First Past the Post doesn’t add up for Labour (L4ND - Labour Conference)
DESCRIPTION:Join Labour for a New Democracy for Why First Past the Post doesn’t add up for Labour. \nAt its founding\, the Labour Party was committed to Proportional Representation. Yet over the century that followed\, FPTP has delivered neither the fair and equal society nor the open and inclusive democracy that Labour stands for. \nJoin the panel to hear why FPTP doesn’t stack up for Labour\, and why we must back a fair\, proportional system at this year’s Labour Party conference. \nChair: Nancy Platts (Politics for the Many) \n\nProfessor Rob Ford (University of Manchester)\nDebbie Abrahams MP (Oldham East & Saddleworth)\nAlex Sobel MP (Leeds North West)\nOlivia Blake MP (Sheffield Hallam)\nPaul Sweeney MSP (Glasgow Region)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments provided.\nWheelchair access.

SUMMARY:Has FPTP Worked for Workers? (TUC Congress)
DESCRIPTION:The powerful levers of the state are being used to undo rights and freedoms\, attack communities and lock people out of their democratic rights. Growing mistrust of politics and politicians is opening the door to a resurgent authoritarian right. Empowerment is perhaps the most important thing the trade union movement can offer people. SUMMARY:Labour for a New Democracy: Defeating right-wing populism

SUMMARY:Labour for a New Democracy Roadshow: Levelling the playing field
DESCRIPTION:The purely democratic problems with First Past the Post are widely known. What’s less well understood is the profound implications it has for progressive parties\, voters and politics. \nRenown academics Jonathan Rodden and Rob Ford join Debbie Abrahams MPs to explore these issues. Why does First Past the Post have a right wing bias? How can Proportional Representation level the playing field for left-wing parties? And what does the UK’s changing political demography mean for Labour’s future prospects under First Past the Post. SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looks Like: Building A Politics For The Many
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, the labour movement has been at the forefront in demanding progressive change to address the big challenges of the era. Today\, the UK faces a social\, political and democratic crisis. Yet the democratic crisis – the breakdown of trust\, the divide between the rulers and the ruled – has often gone ignored. \n200 years ago in Manchester\, tens of thousands of people at St Peter’s Square changed history when they bravely stood – and many fell – fighting for Parliamentary representation. \nEach generation\, democracy must be defended\, remade and revitalised. Today it is time to rebuild our democracy. \nOur political system is undeniably broken. Power is held by the few\, not the many. We need a vision for a political system where people feel their voice is heard\, where ideas can be tested and debated on a level playing field\, and where our institutions – local and national – are responsive and accessible to the millions. \nThis conference will address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in campaigning for real democracy today. Meeting these challenges is not an optional extra for the labour movement – it is part of its historic purpose. If we don’t act\, much darker forces will emerge to speak for the voiceless. \n“This Is What Democracy Looks Like: Building A Politics For The Many” will be the launch pad for a new campaign for a political system that works for all of us. SUMMARY:TUC Congress Fringe: Building a new Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us at TUC Congress for a panel discussion on creating a political system that works for workers. \nChair: Willie Sullivan (ERS Scotland)\nSam Tarry (National Political Officer\, TSSA)\nHoward Beckett (Assistant General Secretary\, Unite)\nShavanah Taj (PCS Wales Secretary & President\, WTUC)\nLynn Henderson (PCS Scottish Secretary & President\, STUC) \nToday\, there is a new democratic frontier for trade unions in Britain: reforming Westminster’s creaking establishment. From a broken voting system\, to an unelected House of Lords and denying 16 and 17 year olds the vote\, Parliament is skewed towards a privileged few. \nTrade unions exist for workers to stand up against concentrations of power and wealth. Today\, our politics concentrates power to a handful of voters in wealthier swing seats\, while throwing 22m votes in the electoral scrapheap.
