SUMMARY:Wales TUC Greener Workplaces Network: Wales’ energy future and the workplace
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n\n**Participants can choose either joining in person or online\, please register for confirming your attendance.  \nThis event: \nGreen energy must be adopted various industries in order to achieve net zero targets by 2050. The transition will have an enormous influence on different workplaces and no worker should be left behind. From a trade union point of view\, green energy has other benefits besides the obvious environmental ones: it can create more jobs on site or in the UK renewable energy industry\, and the investment a company makes is a good indication of its greater commitment to the future of the company. \nHow will energy be generated and used in the future and how might it affect union members’ jobs? \nProf Calvin Jones from Cardiff University offers some radical visions of a sustainable future economy to spark debate on how this might affect workplaces and workers. \nMary Williams from Unite Wales will share with us about union’s views on matters relating to powering heavy industry and manufacturing and the views of workers in the energy industry. \nOther speakers from a practical union case study to be confirmed. \nWho is this event for? \nThis event will be of particular interest to green/environmental reps and health and safety reps\, but will also be relevant for full time officers\, branch officials\, shop stewards\, other reps and all those trade unionists interested in the future of work and the future of the planet. Please share widely with Trade Union colleagues. \nAbout the Greener Workplaces Network \nThe group will meet every other month. Each meeting will feature guest speakers to explore different topics\, provide an opportunity for reps to network and share good practice and include updates from the Wales TUC and our union family. \nThis is your network\, so join us for this event and let us know your thoughts on how to shape our future\, please email swaihongho@tuc.org.uk Stanley Ho from the Wales TUC with your suggestions for future discussion. \nIf you’d like more ideas and information about what unions are doing to create greener workplaces\, download our Greener Workplaces for a Just Transition toolkit here and visit our campaign page where you’ll find campaign videos and more information.

SUMMARY:Supporting Older Workers to Plan\, Progress and Prosper in the Labour Market
DESCRIPTION:How we can better support the skills of older workers given a recruitment and retention crisis and a rapidly aging workforce. \nIn the UK we are living through a recruitment and retention crisis where over 900\,000 pre-retirement workers have left the labour market during the Pandemic. Like many countries in Europe we are also currently facing a demographic crisis\, with a shrinking workforce coupled with increased demands for social services. The labour force in Europe is projected to decrease by an average of two million every year between 2010 and 2030. This represents a loss of 1% of its current size per year for 20 years. Many workers retire early\, not because they want to\, but because they feel compelled to (or) that they do not have other options. \nSolutions need to be found to make work more sustainable\, and to extend working lives to avoid old-age poverty and to reduce state expenditure on pensions and welfare. \nRecent OECD research has highlighted that there are many millions of adults in Europe with low levels of functional literacy and/or numeracy skills and that the majority of these are in employment. This has negative implications for their employment potential and longer-term career prospects. \nAn Innovative European Project led by the TUC has explored the concept of the Mid Life Skills Review (MLSR). This is gaining favour in many countries and the role of social partners in both lobbying for and delivering elements of this is one that could be critical to its success. \nEmployers will need to improve how they attract\, manage and develop people as they age. This is particularly the case against a backdrop of technological change\, the Pandemic\, rising digital skills needs and labour shortages. \nJoin us to hear the latest thoughts from our panel of experts on how we need to help older workers to plan\, progress and prosper in the labour market. We will also explore how the successful Value My Skills offer from the TUC has been significantly improved and expanded. \nSpeakers include: \n\nAlison McGovern – Shadow Minister for Employment\nNaomi Clayton – Deputy Director of Research & Development\, Learning and Work Institute\nKevin Rowan – Head of Organisation\, Services and Skills\, TUC\nTeresa Donegan – Head of Learning and Organising Services\, UNISON\n\nAdmission to the event is free\, though places are limited and we are recommending that people reserve their spaces early.

SUMMARY:Midlands Demands Better - Town Hall Mobilising Rally - Coventry
DESCRIPTION:Autumn of action\n\n\n\nThe government has failed to deal with a cost-of-living crisis of its own making. They dithered and delayed while living standards plummeted. And now they prioritise tax cuts for the rich and attacking trade unions over taking action to support struggling workers. \nIt’s time for a new deal for working people. We need help with energy bills\, a £15 national minimum wage and a real pay rise for every worker. And we need our rights as workers to be strengthened\, not watered down. \nOnly working people can deliver this change – so this autumn\, we’re taking action. \nWe’re holding town hall meetings in every region of England and in Wales. In the Midlands\, we have rallies in Corby\, Coventry and Northampton.  \nWe are coming together to demand better. Join union leaders and local campaigners at one of our town hall events to discuss how we come together to win a new deal for working people!\n\n\n\n  \nRSVP: We Demand Better: Town Hall Rallies | Megaphone UK

SUMMARY:#Labour4PR briefing: your next Labour MP
DESCRIPTION:Parliamentary selections are underway all over the UK – and with an early general election a distinct possibility\, there will be hundreds more taking place in the coming weeks and months. \nJoin this briefing on how to make sure we put forward as many pro-PR Labour candidates as possible at the next general election. \nFollowing the decisive win at this year’s conference\, the next phase of the campaign is to secure the manifesto commitment the Labour Party overwhelmingly voted for – and to help put into office a Labour government to implement it. \nAn important part of that is having a Parliamentary Labour Party full of strong #Labour4PR advocates. We hope you can make it!
