For too long, our democratic system has failed the very people who keep this country running, working people and their unions. Trade unions have a proud history of campaigning for fairness, rights at work and democratic accountability. Yet under the current First Past the Post system, the voices of millions of union members are too often sidelined, their collective power diminished not by lack of will but by electoral mechanics that reward winners-take-all outcomes and concentrate power at the top.
That’s why trade union support for political reform, and in particular for a fairer, more representative voting system, matters. We need power in Westminster, so we gain power in our workplaces.
On this page, you’ll find the latest positions from trade unions on electoral reform, who’s backing change, who has no policy yet, and where you can help build support within your own union. Democracy should be for the many, not the few: that starts with making every vote count.
